Back to School – 5 Tips to Get Back on Track

Summer is over and it’s time to hit the books again. School can get stressful, and stress manifests itself in many ways (one of which is difficulty to fall asleep). Here are a few tips to help you stay on track and get a good night sleep.

  1. Get organized. Having your room cluttered for the summer may be acceptable, after all who wants to spend the hot days cleaning. But as the school year approaches, it’s best to organize your clothes, books, and school supplies. This way you won’t be wasting time looking for stuff and you will feel more relaxed and able to get a better sleep in an organized environment.
  2. Do your homework right after school, or as soon as possible, but don’t wait until the clock hits 10:00PM. You will stay up at night and you won’t be able to perform as well in class. And don’t bother procrastinating — hoping you will wake up early enough to do it before school; chances are you won’t
  3. Don’t fall behind. Making up for missed work can put stress on you, which consequently might keep you up at night.
  4. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Making a schedule and sticking to it will help you stay on track. Overwhelming yourself with extra work and responsibilities might set you back.
  5. Learn to manage your social life. School work takes up most of your day. So, focus on it during the week. Don’t stay up on the phone with your sweetheart or gossip with your bff till 2am. Instead make time for your friends on the weekends.

A Dream within a Dream

Inception (2010) is a Sci-Fi / Thriller written and directed by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight). The movie illustrates the life of a thief who specializes in corporate espionage (played by Leonard DiCaprio). With the help of high tech technology he steals secrets from deep within a person’s subconscious, while the victim is asleep and dreaming. But he is yet to complete his most difficult task, to perform the act of inception (planting an idea in the dreamer’s head). The movie captivates the audience with it’s fascinating plot and makes us wonder about the unexplained concepts of dreams. Is our mind really capable of creating multiple levels of dreams? Well, I think so. I can recall dreaming about waking up and getting dressed and going to work; the dream felt very real and my mind was convinced that I was at work when in fact I was sound asleep in my bed. Only after I woke up I realized I was dreaming.

In the movie, the way to wake up the dreamer is to either kill them or inflict the so called “kick” ( a fall into a bathtub or over a bridge etc.). What is interesting is that the concept of a “kick” holds true in real life. If you ever dreamed about falling out a plane or off the top of a building, chances are you never hit the ground because you woke up before that happened.

So what are your thoughts about the movie? Or have you ever experienced a dream within a dream? Leave us a comment.

Maintaining the Quality of Sleep as We Age

All of us, young and old, need our 8 hours.  Although we experience natural changes to our sleep cycle as we age, studies show that the amount of time our bodies need to sleep remains constant throughout adulthood. But we don’t always get the sleep we require. RLS, sleep apnea, insomnia, heart problems, psychiatric problems, and other medical conditions increase as we get older causing disturbance in sleep. It is important for us to understand why these changes occur and how we can deal with them so that they don’t hinder our ability to get a good night’s sleep .To learn more about these changes and ways to improve sleep quality check out : http://healthysleep.med.harvard.edu/healthy/science/variations/changes-in-sleep-with-age
